Candy Buy-Back Results

Katie and Courtney with some of the collected candy.

This year we had almost 200 patients sell their Halloween candy to our office, resulting in us giving over $1500 out in exchange.

500 pounds of candy was donated to the USO at DFW airport and will be handed out to troops returning home from their work overseas.

In addition, we matched this with a donation of $1500 to the ACS Dallas Dental Outreach.

The ACS Dental Outreach Initiative provides free dental screenings and
education seminars on dental hygiene by licensed professionals. To
reinforce what they learn during the seminars, students receive a gift bag
containing a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental education material. In
addition, children receive a screening evaluation and a recommendation
report to share with their parents or guardian. For many children, the ACS Dental Initiative screening will be their first dental check-up.

In fact, the American Dental Association (ADA) and
the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) state that children from
low-income families are less likely to see a dentist regularly, and suffer
twice as many dental cavities as their peers. -Source ACS online.

Thank you so much for your continued participation in this program.

Tips on Breaking Your Child of their Pacifier

Tips on Breaking Your Child of their Pacifier

Take it away early

To break the binky habit, doctors say taking the pacifier away sooner than later is the most effective strategy. Babies have their own powerful ways of protesting the end of a beloved habit like the pacifier. But taking it away when your child is too young to express his displeasure and negotiate with words can make the transition simpler and easier.

Go cold turkey

You’re the parent, you have the power to say no! That is – if you’re willing to accept the punishment they will most likely bestow upon you for the weeks following.

Give it away

Bring them all into our office and we will pay them in tokens that they can use in our toy tower.

Take it away gradually

A slow, gentle weaning process may make the most sense for your child and your family. Restricting the pacifier to certain times (such as bedtime) or certain places (such as the crib) is often the first step.

Sabotage it

Poke a tiny hole in the tip, just enough to restrict the amount of suction they can get. Slowly make the hole larger and larger until they voluntarily put it down for good.

Send it to the Binky Fairy

Make it fun! Blow up a helium balloon and tie the pacifier to the string. Watch with them as it goes up, up, and away for good.

What if my child is scared to go to the dentist?

I wanted to share with you the cutest email we received from a patient recently.  I think it is great that she felt she could ask Dr. Holly about the procedure, and hope that maybe this can alleviate some of your fears as a parent as well.

“Dear Dr.Holly,
I am not too pleased to get my teeth extracted because I know it will hurt and I am really scared.

Love,
E “

“E,
Thank you for letting me know that you are scared.  I would like you to know that I will be very gentle, just like your own fingers.  I will make sure your tooth is asleep and only wiggles and dances, I do not think pulling is a very nice thing to do to teeth or hair or anything else.  Please know that your mom will be with you the entire time and most importantly, you will keep your tooth to put under your pillow that night.
I am always so proud of you and know you will be okay.
Keep wiggling!!!
Dr. Holly”
